Multiple Sclerosis: Do You Really Need to "Shop" for a Diet?

Is there a perfect diet for multiple sclerosis? I compared the main ones the way I used to compare flyers — and what I found surprised me.

For ten years, I hunted down all the tricks for shopping deals and coupons. Comparing flyers, reading labels, chasing the bargain, not getting fooled by the pretty packaging. 🛒 So picture my surprise when I realized that, ever since my multiple sclerosis diagnosis, I was doing the exact same thing — but with diets.

Same reflex. Compare, weigh, hunt for THE best deal. Except this time, the cart is my health. And it made me ask a real question: is shopping for a diet to help yourself actually the right approach?

The Store Shelf

When you walk into the "MS diets" aisle, the shelves are crowded:

  • Swank — the granddaddy (1950s). Very low in saturated fat.

  • OMS (Overcoming MS) — plant-based + fish, zero saturated fat.

  • The Wahls Protocol — nutrient-dense paleo, designed by a neurologist who lives with MS herself.

  • The Best Bet Diet — cuts dairy, gluten and legumes, with a big focus on supplements.

  • Keto (modified Atkins) — very low sugar, lots of fat.

  • Mediterranean — the most "livable": olive oil, fish, vegetables.

Six different boxes, six pretty packages. Easy to think you just grab one and head to the checkout.

Except… nope.

Even a single "brand" isn't one block

Take Wahls. We say "the Wahls Protocol" like it's one single thing. In reality, it has three levels 🪜:

  1. The Wahls Diet — the entry point. Loads of vegetables; you drop gluten, dairy and eggs.

  2. Wahls Paleo — a notch stricter: organ meats, seaweed, fermented foods.

  3. Wahls Paleo Plus — the ketogenic version, very low in carbs.

So what does "buying Wahls" even mean? Level 1 or level 3? That's already three products in one box. 📦

The detail that made me pause 🧈

Here's my favorite example, dead simple: ghee (clarified butter).

With Wahls, ghee is allowed — because the milk proteins have been removed. With Best Bet, butter (ghee included) is flat-out banned, no exceptions.

The wild part? Both diets start from exactly the same idea: it's the milk protein they suspect. Same reasoning, opposite verdict on the same food. If that doesn't prove you can't just "grab a diet" off the shelf without reading the fine print… 😉

And while we're at it, think about eggs. 🥚 You'll often read that Wahls doesn't eat them — true, but because she doesn't tolerate them, not because the protocol bans them. Her advice? Drop them for a few months, then reintroduce them to test your own tolerance. Me, for example — testing showed me I don't react to egg yolks or duck eggs, so I keep them. Same box, but this time it's not a rule — it's case by case.

The real question

Shopping like this, I eventually got it. Look at these diets up close, and they're not really competing. They're all whispering the same thing 🔥:

  • Calm inflammation.

  • Take care of the gut.

  • Remove the foods that stir things up.

  • Feed your cells with real food.

The packaging changes; the core stays the same. So hunting for THE perfect diet on the shelf might just be… the wrong question.

Because there's one ingredient no box contains: you. 🎯 My body doesn't react like yours. What eases my heavy legs might do nothing for someone else.

How I shop ✨

What I do isn't emptying the whole aisle at once. I test one change at a time. I feel it. I take notes. I adjust. A month without dairy — I feel what shifts in my body. More leafy greens — I listen to how my body reacts. Does ghee agree with me? My body answers that, not a label.

One honest reminder, though: despite decades of research, none of these diets is officially proven for MS. The strongest support still goes to vitamin D and omega-3s. That doesn't mean they don't help — it means your grocery list is yours to build, ideally with your health team. 💚

So no, I don't think you "shop" for a diet the way you grab a box of cereal. You build your cart, slowly, one item at a time. And the best product on the shelf… is the one that makes YOU feel good.

So — how do you shop? Tell me in the comments. 👇
